The best way to avoid Substance abuse or addiction is never risk taking addictive drugs to begin with. But the temptation to feel different or fit in or suppress physical and emotional pain often seems like a good idea at the time and we fall into that trap. Obviously some drugs and medications are beneficial in treating many cases but when we come to rely on them and don’t seek to heal the root causes we run into long-term consequences and addiction problems. Physical and emotional pain is a part of life and if we don’t learn to handle and heal these through healthy preventive measures and management methods other than popping pills we end up creating much more pain for ourselves in the long run.
The effects of Substance abuse affect a person physically, mentally, emotionally, socially and spiritually. Therefore comprehensive addiction treatment which teaches individuals how to take care of themselves on each of these levels is imperative otherwise the person will eventually backslide and relapse.
We live in a society where alcohol and drugs are readily available and are often promoted for profit. This fact is clearly evident on TV commercials where they glamorize alcohol but neglect to inform us about the enormous downsides associated with drinking, Such as the millions of substance abuse problems along with alcoholism and drug addiction cases and the deaths and broken lives. We live in an era where quick-fix is king, there are now pills for everything and pharmaceutical companies advertise pills for everything and more often than not they don’t get to the root of the problem and often produces worse side effects. Other countries smuggle their drugs into ours for profit but now we‘ve also become a main supplier, more people are hooked on prescription drugs such as Oxycontin, and other opioids than cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine put together. We live in a free country and therefore can choose to put a Band-Aid on our problems by taking drugs or treating the actual problem it's up to each individual to decide for themselves. Obviously some drugs and medications are beneficial in treatment but when we come to rely on them and don’t seek to heal the root causes we run into long-term chemical dependency problems.
Nevertheless there are drug treatment centers that can bring about recovery for those who want freedom from addiction.

| All of us have natural chemicals in our brain called neurotransmitters. There are about 300 neurotransmitter chemicals in the brain such as dopamine, acetylcholine, norepinephrine, serotonin and endorphin. The function of these chemicals is to facilitate the transmission of information from the brain to all parts of the body, by way of electrical impulses. The information that is transmitted produces a variety of effects. Some of these effects are normal body functions like sweating, digestion and cellular activity of which we are not aware.Other effects we are aware of, these are feelings that cause us to engage in certain activities that are necessary for a healthy life. Feelings like hunger---- |

which cause us to eat, a natural euphoria when we exercise so that we will exercise again and a sex drive so that our species will continue to exist. Neurotransmitters produced by the brain in the pleasure center or central nervous systems are our body’s natural reward system. When we are hungry, we eat and feel satisfied. When we need rest, we sleep and feel rested. When we exercise, endorphin is release as neurotransmitters and we feel good, a natural high often called a “runner high.” This high or good feelings we experience through these natural chemicals in our brains are important so that we know what activities are healthy to help us thrive and lead healthy lives. |
