Many drug dependent individuals suffer also from mental illnesses. If not recognized and treated properly a psychological disorder can cause an individuals to self medicate. Dual diagnosis treatment centers focus primarily in these type cases. Patients who are have both a psychiatric illness and drug and/or alcohol addiction problems obviously require a different program that one who only has a substance abuse problem. Note that anybody who is addiction to hard drugs will appear to have psychological issues such as paranoid schizophrenia, bipolar, depression or anxiety to name a few. However, in most cases this is only a result of drug abuse or addiction. Often people are misdiagnosed and placed other addictive psyche meds and experience more problems later on. For this reason only after a patient is fully detoxified and totally clean from drugs should they be give any labels. Sometimes mental conditions are cause by a chemical imbalance within the brain which is not drug induced these cases are candidates for Dual diagnosis treatment and may need serious medications and intensive rehabilitation therapy. Typically, these programs combined a range of treatments depending on the nature of the psychological infirmity and the drugs addicted too. The psychiatric state if not treated may cause actions that leads to drug or alcohol abuse and dependency, thus, complicating the illnesses.
