One of first steps of recovery is finding an appropriate drug treatment center. However, this process is often difficult because there are so many types of drug treatment centers available. I most cases the first phase of drug treatment is detoxification. The detoxification process decreases drug levels absorbed in the body from drug use. Various drug addictions cause severe physical withdrawal symptoms and require medically supervised detoxification to provide a save process for withdrawal; especially physical addictions to alcohol (alcoholism) or some tranquilizers, because they are life threatening without medical attention. Also opioids such as oxycodone, Oxycontin (Oxy's), Roxicodone (Roxy's), Fentanyl, Percocet, hydrocodone, Norco, Vicodin, Lortab and other semisynthetic morphine derivatives like heroin and Dilaudid cause excruciatingly painful withdrawals, emotionally and physically and are best detoxified by medical means, however, "though horrible" the withdrawal symptoms aren't generally life threatening. The average time a patient spends in drug detoxification is about one to two weeks unless they're addicted to higher milligrams of methadone which could take a month or longer depending on the detoxification methods. Once a patient is detoxified he or she should enter directly into drug rehab. Because, detoxification without addiction treatment is mostly useless. For that reason, be sure to have a rehabilitation program setup directly after the detoxification process unless of course the detox is at the drug treatment center you've chosen to be your rehabilitation program as well. If the addicted individual doesn’t want help family and/or friends should make preparations for a drug intervention.
